How to Reach Florence

By Plane

The reference stopovers are Florence or Pisa airports.
n many cases it is cheaper to fly to Pisa, the base of Ryanair’s low cost flights. The low cost flights that land in Florence airport are those of the Vueling company.
You can easily reach Florence from Pisa by bus or train (in this case connections last about one hour from Pisa to Santa Maria Novella station).
You can easily get to the city centre from Florence airport, which is about 10 kilometres from the city in the municipality of Peretola, by tram in less than half an hour.
If you do not want to use the public transport, you can take a taxi or rent a car to cover the route between the airports and the centre of Florence.

By Train

Perhaps the best way to reach Florence from other Italian towns is by train, especially if we consider cities such as Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples which are connected by high speed trains. It is advisable to check the timetables and prices of trains to Florence on the Trenitalia and Italo websites, taking advantage of their offers.

By Car: Journey and Stop

Florence is well connected to the main Italian cities through the A1, the main motorway from the North to the South of Italy. The A11 motorway and the Fi-Pi-Li (a two-lane highway) connect Florence to the Tyrrehenian coast.

However, the car is not the best choice to get to Florence. As a matter of fact, in the historic centre a ZTL area is active and many roads are, in addition to being traffic limited, pedestrian and therefore not accessible by car. You can enter the historic centre by paying a four-hour permit for transit, but the car cannot be parked. Even in the more decentralised areas, there are many restrictions for parking. There are paid places from 8 am to 8 pm; they are marked with blue stripes and the cost increases by the hour. A consistent number of the parking places - marked with white stripes - is reserved exclusively for residents.
It is practically impossible to find free parking in Florence.
The historic centre is dotted with private garages that are owned by different companies. The daily rates are around 25-30 euros. The further away you get from the centre, the more the price decreases. If you choose a private garage, access to the ZTL is regulated by the garage itself which communicates the number of the license plate to the competent authorities.

Florence by Bicycle

The bike is a very comfortable, as well as ecological, means of getting around the narrow streets of the historic centre. You can choose either guided tours or to rent independently a bike (normal, multi-speed, hybrid or electric one) and move in absolute freedom.

Emergency Medical Service Hours: from 8 pm to 8 am on all weekdays and from 8 am on the day before a holiday to 8 am on the day following the holiday.
In the historic centre of Florence, you can go to the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital for both the Emergency Room (piazza di Santa Maria Nuova 1) and the Medical Guard (via della Pergola 1 / A).

Garbage Collection

In Florence it is mandatory to carry out separate waste collection which is organized as follows:

  • organic
  • paper and cardboard
  • packaging and containers (pet, glass, aluminum)
  • not-differentiable waste

Paper and cardboard must be deposited on the street on fixed days. The remainder, suitably differentiated, must be deposited in the appropriate containers.

Eating Out

In Florence there is no shortage of bars, restaurants, pizzerias and ice cream parlours. Here we indicate a few that are in the immediate vicinity of the apartments and that have been tested: both are recommended for the quality of the food and for the price

Anita Restaurant, via del Parlagio 2r, Florence, tel. +39 055 218698.

One of the historic restaurants in Florence offering traditional cuisine at a very fair price. The portions are generous and the waiters are kind and nice. You should try the cold cuts, the ribollita (the typical Tuscan soup), the pici pasta with a wild boar sauce, the tagliolini pasta with truffles and the steak… naturally drinking a good glass of Chianti.

Casella 18 Restaurant, via Sant’Elisabetta 18, Florence, tel. +39 055 285595.

A delightful restaurant a few steps from the Duomo. Fresh ingredients for tasty dishes: excellent first courses with fresh homemade pasta, second courses made with very good meat and fish. Irresistible bruschetta with excellent Tuscan oil. They also serve delicious pizza..

Procopio Ice-cream Parlour, via Pietrapiana 60r, Florence, tel. +39 055 2346014.

This ice-cream parlour, which came first at the competition Firenze Gelato Festival in 2011, is located almost in front of the Loggia del Pesce in Piazza dei Ciompi. It has never lowered its quality. Perhaps it is the best ice-cream in town… Raw materials such as almonds, citrus fruits, fresh ricotta, honey, basil enrich really good flavours.
